The European masters of fuel consumption

Several truck drivers across Europe have been named #scania Fuel Masters in recent weeks due to their understanding and commitment to the driver’s role in reducing fuel consumption.

Scania launched the Fuel Masters Europe challenge as part of its ongoing commitment to reduce fuel consumption.

The challenge invited driver’s to post their best average fuel consumption results over a stated 100km route that they had recently driven. By sharing this data the drivers could collect likes, or “honks” from other drivers, which would attract the attention of a jury panel who each week crowned three drivers as #scania Fuel Masters.

As well as the honour of gaining the #scania Fuel Master title, the winning drivers also received a prize of a #scania watch.

The French Fuel Master

One of the first #scania Fuel Master winners was Dessy Arnaud from France whose winning journey involved driving a 6×2 tractor on country roads in mixed sunny and cloudy weather of around 10 degrees C.

Pulling 37 tonnes with a 440 hp truck, Arnaud’s average fuel consumption was 29.9 litres/ 100 km.  Arnaud said: “I find that the driver has a very large role to play in terms of fuel consumption from an ecological and economic viewpoint.”

Arnaud shared his top three fuel saving tips:

  1. Use driving aidssuch as the cruise control, the retarder and the #scania Driver Support system;
  1. Drive defensively withanticipationand attention;
  1. Take good careandpropermaintenance of equipment.

The Independent Belgian

Mike Heusschen from Belgium is also now a #scania Fuel Master. Heusschen’s average fuel consumption was 27.5 litres/ 100 km while driving a 4×2 tractor with a 450 hp truck. He was pulling 39 tonnes on highways and country roads in mixed sunny and cloudy weather of around 10 degrees C.

On becoming a #scania Fuel Master Heusschen said: “It was an honour to receive this title. Especially as since July I have been an independent driver and deliberately chose a new #scania 450 Euro 6 due to its fuel consumption.”

Regarding Scania’s focus on drawing attention to how drivers’ play a part in reducing fuel consumption, Heusschen said: “The driver is the only person that can reduce the fuel consumption, with the appropriate equipment of course.”

Mike Heusschen’s top three fuel saving tips are:

  1. Always monitor the consumption and think about unnecessary consumption;
  1. Slow down when approaching a red light and let the truck roll downhills;
  1. Set the cruise control to 87 instead of 89.

The Proud German

Thomas Fensel from Germany became a #scania Fuel Master with an average fuel consumption of 29.7 litres/100km.

Fensel was driving a 4×2 tractor on country roads during sunny weather of around 10 degrees C, while pulling 30 tonnes with a 480 hp truck. He said: “I think it’s great to have won against so many participants. I am proud to be a #scania Fuel Master.”

Regarding Scania’s focus on reducing fuel consumption, Fensel said: “I think it’s great that #scania places great importance on protecting the environment by reducing fuel consumption because this more economical driving style saves money, thereby increasing the profits of a company.”

Fensel’s top three fuel saving tips are:

  1. Plan ahead and drive cautiously in traffic;
  1. Drive at a speed of 80 km/h before intersections and let the truck roll down hills;
  1. Time gear shifts appropriately to avoid high engine speeds.

The #scania Fuel Masters Europe challenge began on 26 October 2015 and ends on 20 December 2015. The competition has been open to all kinds of trucks and brands as long as it is a Euro 5 and Euro 6. Find out more here.
