Nissan accelerates its electrification at Tokyo Motor Show with new zero-emission concept vehicles and Formula E announcement

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today extended its leadership of the electric revolution, showcasing two new concept vehicles – including its first electric Crossover – and announcing its entry into the Formula E race series.

The company – the world leader in electric vehicles and the pioneer of the world’s best-selling electric car, the Nissan LEAF – used the international platform of the Tokyo Motor Show to showcase its vision of an electric future.

Following September’s global unveil of the new Nissan Leaf and the launch of its new ‘electric ecosystem’ at the recent Nissan Futures 3.0 event, the Japanese car manufacturer presented two all-electric concept vehicles at the show. It signals the company’s intention to maintain electric vehicle leadership in the sector and to deliver on its brand promise of innovation that excites.

The concepts include the new Nissan IMx all-electric Crossover and the new Nissan LEAF NISMO, both of which give customers a glimpse of the company’s latest and future innovations aligned to its Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision.

To underline its commitment to make electric mobility truly exciting, Nissan also confirmed its participation in the 2018-2019 season of Formula E racing.

The stunningly designed Nissan IMx, an all-electric 4 seater crossover concept offering fully autonomous operation and a driving range of more than 600 kilometers (Japan JC08).

This concept utilizes Nissan’s all new and dedicated electric vehicle platform married to twin motor power units that deliver 320kWh capacity and an incredible 700nm of torque.

The platform allows the floor to be completely flat, resulting in a cavernous cabin and enhanced driving dynamics. With a low center of gravity, the chassis delivers sharp handling that promises to redefine the crossover segment.

The innovation continues through the high capacity battery that can serve as a virtual power plant sharing electricity through its vehicle to grid capability with both wireless and conventional charging possible.  It’s designed to strengthen the link between car and driver as a close, reliable partner that delivers a safer, more convenient and more enjoyable drive.

“The Nissan IMx zero-emission crossover concept vehicle embodies the future of Nissan Intelligent Mobility,” said Daniele Schillaci, executive vice president of global marketing and sales, EV business, and chairman of Nissan’s management committee for Japan, Asia and Oceania.  “Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, Nissan is committed to changing the way people and cars communicate, as well as how cars interact with society in the near future and beyond.”

The move to participate in the growing Formula E series gives Nissan a highly visible global platform from which to spread the message of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.

“As the ultimate expression of the thrill of instant acceleration and agile handling that’s at the heart of Nissan zero-emission driving, Nissan is going to electrify the Formula E championship,” said Daniele Schillaci, executive vice president of global marketing and sales, EV business, and chairman of Nissan’s management committee for Japan, Asia and Oceania.

Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, is excited to welcome Nissan and said, “To have a name like Nissan coming on board is a momentous day for the series. Not only is it great to welcome a new manufacturer to the Formula E family - it’s great to see our first Japanese manufacturer entering the frame, showing truly how global the electric revolution is. Japan is a country at the forefront of new technologies with one of the biggest followings of Formula E. The shift towards sustainable mobility is in motion and it’s unstoppable. I look forward to seeing the Nissan logo adorned on the new-look cars for season five.”

Nissan will enter the series from late in 2018, when the all-electric championship will introduce new chassis and battery regulations.
