You will not believe what these lamps are made of

Energy-efficiency is a topic that has been discussed for years now. The most talked about topics are the use of alternative ways of creating energy such as solar and wind power, but what if the solution is right beside you?

The new installation “Living Things” by Pittsburgh’s Mattress Factory raises is trying to answer that question. They are using micro-algae to fuel common household appliances.

Micro-algae can be found everywhere, built into the environment, though we rarely give it a second thought. However, the nutrient-rich material, with its ability to recycle light, heat, and carbon could prove a powerful untapped resource — one that can be converted into biofuel.

The installation itself focuses in on how micro-algae, specifically Spirulina algae, can be harnessed for everyday use in our homes. Broken into three sections – a living room, dining room, and kitchen (which doubles as a “control center”) – the exhibit features hand-blown glass vessels that function to light and heat the space.

Each vessel can be managed separately using knobs found in the kitchen area, and all are powered with living micro-algae and connected through nearly a half-mile of hidden wiring and plumbing.

This algae when its dry and it doesn’t serves the purpose of creating energy can be used in drinks and dishes. So, it is a multi purpose biological option.

The artist’s behind “Living Things,” architectural designer Jacov Douenias and industrial designer Ethan Frier, have even called in local bartenders and chefs to create specialty Spirulina concoctions during the course of the installation.

Though there’s no word on whether these micro-algae-powered designs will actually go into production at the close of the exhibition in March of 2016, it certainly provides some food for thought. A really versatile option! Stunning, right?
