Nissan’s sustainable journey in India: RNAIPL’s renewed commitment towards carbon neutrality

This week saw the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, the United Nations annual celebration dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging action for the environment. In line with this important date and Nissan Ambition 2030, the facilities across the AMIEO (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania) region have levelled up their sustainability ambitions in order to accelerate meaningful sustainable change across Nissan's operations.

Specifically, Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) has announced that it will be meeting several of its important sustainability milestones by 2030, 15 years earlier than planned. Serving as an exciting update on the region's journey to 2045 Carbon Neutrality, by 2030, RNAIPL aims to accelerate the adoption of green energy to power 80% of plant operations, become water positive through harvesting rainwater and utilising water recycling infrastructure, and reduce the amount of energy required to manufacture a car by 20% through adopting plant-wide energy efficiency initiatives.

The acceleration of these ambitions will provide a tangible benefit to the generations of people living within the plant's local community, a legacy RNAIPL is committed to defining. RNAIPL has long played a trailblazer role within the AMIEO region in the energy efficiency and sustainability spaces, powering the region to eclipse Nissan's global target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

"As Nissan globally drives towards a cleaner, safer, more inclusive world, it is wonderful to see facilities in the AMIEO region taking accelerated steps to outpace goals set out in Ambition 2030. The progress achieved by RNAIPL against their 2045 Carbon Neutrality goal – 5 years ahead of our global target – is testament to the dedication of the full team and serves as an inspiring example to follow for the entire region. I look forward to further supporting the efforts of all our facilities in the region as they work towards their sustainability goals and continue to make a positive impact on their communities" says Friederike Kienitz, Senior Vice President, Sustainability, Corporate Governance, Legal, External Affairs and Communications, Nissan AMIEO.
