Despite a clash with the German football’s Cup Final between Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt in the city this evening, the Berlin E-Prix played out in front of a full-house this afternoon. Today’s Formula E race in the capital was the fifth it has hosted – including two at last season’s double-header meeting – and the fourth to be held at the former Tempelhof Airport. After Friday’s chilly weather, there was a cloudy sky for shakedown but the conditions improved gradually and the 2018 Berlin E-Prix started in pleasant sunshine, with the air and track temperatures standing at 22°C and almost 30°C respectively. The heat was not a problem for the drivers’ Michelin tyres, however, despite the fact that this is one of the hardest-wearing tracks of the season due to its ribbed concrete surface.

The 2.37km, 10-turn circuit visits the taxiways of the former airport and the vast available space allows a layout that provides spectators with a view of practically all the action. The e-prix itself featured anticlockwise 45 laps of the purpose-built track, part of which ran through a tunnel that allowed fans to get up close to the cars, a novel idea which proved a huge hit. “The fact that this track is so abrasive and hard for the drivers is no secret,” notes Serge Grisin, the manager of Michelin’s Formula E programme. “After last year, though, we had every confidence in the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2’s ability to deliver consistent performance and resistance to wear from start to finish, and that’s effectively what we saw today. Even though this year’s cars are more efficient and more powerful in race trim, the drivers were able to keep fighting all the way to the flag without having to worry about their tyres. I think we can say that if our tyre is capable of coping with Berlin, then it can cope with anything.

The venues still to come before the end of the season, namely Zurich, which is an unknown entity but which should be gentler on tyres than today’s race, and New York, where we raced for the first time in 2017, shouldn’t pose any major problems for the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2. Since its introduction at the start of Season 3, it has repeatedly demonstrated its outstanding versatility and performance potential. That’s a huge result in such a fiercely-fought championship as this.” The 2018 Berlin E-Prix was won by Daniel Abt, ahead of his Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler team-mate Lucas Di Grassi and Jean-Eric Vergne (Techeetah). The next round of the 2017/2018 ABB FIA Formula E Championship will take teams to Zurich, Switzerland, on June 10.Felix Rosenqvist (86).
