Jaguar TCS Racing open season eight with double points in Diriyah

Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, 28 January 2022 – Jaguar TCS Racing score strong points in Saudi Arabia at the Diriyah E-Prix – the opening round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Sam Bird finished the race in fourth, narrowly missing out on a podium.
Brit, Sam Bird, lined up fifth on the grid after making it through the group stages of the new Qualifying format to secure a place in the quarter-finals. In the new ‘Duel’ quarter final, Sam competed against fellow Englishman Jake Dennis in the Avalanche Andretti before he was eliminated. In Formula E’s third night race, Sam fought with the ROKiT Venturi of Lucas Di Grassi and the Porsche of André Lotterer throughout demonstrating his great defending skills to bring his Jaguar I-TYPE 5 home in fourth.
Mitch Evans, had a strong start in Qualifying Group A but the session ended under a yellow flag when Edoardo Mortara crashed at the first corner. Evans was unable to set a competitive second qualifying lap time and lined up on the grid in fourteenth. The Kiwi made decisive overtakes throughout the race and showed the speed of the Jaguar I-TYPE 5 by gaining four places and securing the final point scoring position. Mitch also achieved his first FANBOOST of the season – voted by fans online.
The British team, Jaguar TCS Racing, sit fourth in the teams’ standings after the first round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
James Barclay, Jaguar TCS Racing Team Principal: “A solid start to Season 8 for the team with a good double-points finish. Fourth position for Sam was a great result and if a few things had worked out slightly differently we could have been in a position to try and fight for the podium as well. Mitch was badly blocked in qualifying today and we hope this will be reviewed and addressed in the new format going forward. Starting P14, Mitch had a big job in the race but he made great progress to secure a point - always important in a long championship. A good foundation to start and we can build from here tomorrow.”
Mitch Evans, Jaguar TCS Racing driver #9: “I’m walking away from today disappointed as we were really strong in the practice sessions – especially on group 220kW (group qualifying). I got caught out in the group stages when Edo hit the wall but I feel like we definitely had the pace to be in the Duels but that wasn’t meant to be today. In the race, we were making ground up to eighth but our energy management wasn’t quite where it needed to be and I dropped a couple of places. Hopefully we’ll have a clean run in the Duels tomorrow and have a better starting position for the race.”
Sam Bird, Jaguar TCS Racing driver #10: “We started the race in fifth and made up one position to finish fourth. Really solid points for Jaguar TCS Racing today with both cars in the points – everyone here is pleased and we’re making good progress. There is still work to be done, we can still learn and improve things but a good way to start the year.”
